- Orphaned & Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programme
- 2006
The Homecare Mentors Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) program was started in 2006. The program aims at caring for the physical, social and spiritual needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Kibera.
Imagine Children of Kibera full of hope for a better tomorrow! Imagine children bringing light in their small dark homes because they have experienced the love of Jesus! Our utmost desire is to see children of Kibera know the word of God and grow up experiencing the fullness and joy of salvation. This we believe will mould them into agents of change in their own homes and the community.
Our Vision
To see orphaned and vulnerable children belonging to a community and enjoying its full love, care and nurturing support.
Our Mission
Building caring church communities to provide demonstrations in protecting and caring for orphans and vulnerable children.
“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” (Hebrews 6:10)
SAMSON OKEYO MAKOMELE
Samson is an exemplary student and member of his family. A respected leader and debater in his primary school in Kibera (Ayany), he emerged among the best-performing students in his primary school certificate exam (KCPE) in 2016. He scored 398 out of 500 marks, earning him a High School place in Friend’s School Kamusinga, an academic ‘giant’ in Kenya’s secondary schools. However, his dream was about to be shattered, since his parent’s income was too little. His father (Musa) worked as a night guard earning $ 40 per month, and his mother (Everlyn) worked irregular day jobs for a meager income.
In addition, the parents had Samson’s other three siblings to nurture; two in secondary school, and the youngest in primary school.
Realizing the impending jeopardy about to terminate Samson’s academic pursuit, his primary school head teacher sought help from Homecare, and narrated Samson story. When interviewed, Samson’s confidence, Christian commitment and strong communication skills stood out. Here before us stood Kenya’s future, worthy of investing into. As a membership organization, reliant on goodwill from members and partners, we sought help from our networks and secured the much-needed school fees for Samson. He began his race to becoming a transformational leader in Kenya, and his grades are ever encouraging. The journey however is not easy, yet in partnership with willing people just like you, we are reaching one life like Samson at a time. We now educate
150 other students like Samson, paying for their uniforms, tuition fees, learning kits and food.
The current costs for supporting a child through elementary (primary) school for a year is Kshs 40,000 ($ 400), while a student in High school requires Kshs 60,000 ($ 600).
This caters for the following: tuition fees, school uniforms, stationery and text books, monthly food hampers for non-boarding students, among others.
Students are encouraged to regularly attend the weekly Bible Club forums, as well as the Vacational Academic Clinics, Camps and Teenager forums.
Mentorship and counseling is made available upon need, especially while children are on their quarterly vacation.
